Pipino Vegetarian Restaurant

Sunday, July 02, 2017 0 Comments

As I have told you in my previous post, I have already embraced the Vegan/Vegetarian lifestyle. Of course, being vegan won't be completely satisfying without dining in vegan restaurant around the metro. My goal is to try most, if not all of them should my pocket will allow.

This particular day was a good time and my schedule was not so hectic so I went to visit this resto. Located at Malingap Street in Teacher's Village, this restaurant offers healthy and yummy dishes for non-meat eaters like me.

Dining in a restaurant wouldn't be complete without having a selfie. This cozy corner is the best for taking pictures or just feast your eyes with the artwork.

Their small kitchen is just being used for preparing desserts, I think, because the food was cooked downstairs at Pino.
They also have goodies for sale like these vegan cookies, cupcakes and chips.

This corner is my favorite. The lighting is perfect for food photography.

I ordered this vegan kare-kare with brown rice (P195), enough for a person with small appetite like me. It is bursting with flavor that you forget it's not the "real thing". The bagoong tasted the same as real one too. I'm amazed how they veganized everything.
And for my dessert, I had a big serving of the famous halo-halo (P255). It comes with a slice of vegan leche flan, nice cream and of course plant-based milk (soy milk).

My overall dining experience was awesome. I would rate the ambiance 4/5, taste 4/5 and price 4/5. I will surely be back to try other dishes. This place is highly recommended for you my veggie-lover friends.

Recipe: Vegan Laing

Tuesday, June 13, 2017 0 Comments

Laing is one of my favorite while I was growing up. My grandmother cooks laing almost everyday. It's a staple in every household especially if you are a Bicolana. Laing is made from Taro leaves - fresh or dried, coconut milk, and your choice of pork, shrimp, dried/smoked fish. It is also seasoned with alamang and lots of siling haba or labuyo. And since I'm going vegan already, I did not add meat or fish in this recipe and it's just as delicious as the one with pork. Even my daughter who doesn't eat laing tasted it and said it's okay as her baon.

Ingredients
  • ½ kg gabi (taro) leaves
  • 1 cup coconut cream (1st extraction)
  • 3 cups coconut milk (2nd extraction)
  • 2 tbsp black bean garlic sauce
  • 1 tbsp ginger
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 1 medium onion
  • siling haba or labuyo (chili)
  • salt to taste
  • veggie chicharon for toppings
Directions
  1. Sauté garlic, then onion and ginger. Then add the black bean garlic sauce.
  2. Add coconut milk. Cover until boiling.
  3. Add gabi and do not stir, just press the leaves to soak into the coconut. Over low heat, cover until all the leaves are wilted and tender.
  4. Add the coconut cream (thick coconut milk), sili (chili) and salt. Cover until coconut milk looks like oil.
  5. Serve hot with rice and veggie chicharon.

Recipe: Vegan Longganisa Inspired by AstigVegan

Wednesday, May 31, 2017 0 Comments

It's been over a month since I had eaten pork. And there are days when I crave for adobo, sinigang and my favorite longganisa. So I searched for recipes and voila, the first hit was from astigvegan.com which is very popular on the internet. I'm not vegan (just yet) but it is a very healthy substitute and of course delicious! I omitted some ingredients (porcini mushrooms, liquid smoke and pine nuts) from her original recipe because I don't have them in my kitchen.

I fried some organic egg, made some cauli rice and there goes my favorite Longsilog! Craving satisfied!

INGREDIENTS

1 small pack dried shiitake mushrooms, soaked in warm water, minced
1 pack extra-firm tofu, drained, pressed, crumbled
¼ cup brown sugar
3 garlic cloves, peeled, crushed, and minced
¼ cup tomato paste
1 teaspoon paprika
1 tablespoon vinegar
2 tablespoon chili oil (or more if you're a bicolana like me)
2 tablespoons soy sauce
drizzle of honey
black pepper
salt to taste
1 cup or more of breadcrumbs
3 tablespoons vegetable oil

PREPARATIONS
  1. Mix all ingredients in a bowl except the breadcrumbs and vegetable oil. Mix, mix, mix.
  2. Add the breadcrumbs. Mix everything using your hands so all the ingredients are properly combined.
  3. Set aside and let it marinate for at least 30 minutes.
  4. Taste mixture and adjust seasoning to taste.
  5. Use your hands to form mixture into sausage shape, add more breadcrumbs if needed so your longganisa will not be soggy.
  6. Heat your pan or skillet over medium heat.
  7. Once hot enough, pour vegetable oil.
  8. Fry vegan "longganisa" until all sides are brown.
  9. Turn off heat and transfer to a serving plate.
  10. Serve hot with tomato on the side.

Recipe: Vegetarian Sushi Roll

Sunday, May 28, 2017 0 Comments

Hello guys! I'm so back from a long absence. As you may have noticed if you follow me on instagram, I have been eating healthy foods since April. This is because of some health issues that came out after my annual physical exam. Year after year, a new illness is discovered by my doctor (nothing so serious and dreaded btw) but it still made me praning. So, I decided to make some changes in what I put inside my body. I started incorporating whole foods into my diet. More fruits and veggies, less meat (no pork at all) and fish especially processed. I also started going to the gym to stretch those muscles out. After all, prevention is better than cure right? Cooking is one of my passion and I think I will be sharing some of my vegetarian recipes on this blog once in a while..

I love sushi, maki and everything japanese. I always buy them whenever I get the chance. It is such a satisfying meal and makes me so full after eating. So, while I was shopping at the supermarket, I saw some sushi and thought why not make it myself? It will be more tipid and more delicious than the ones sold in Tokyo-Tokyo charot. Of course I made the vegetarian version, no raw fish involved.

Heres my recipe:

INGREDIENTS
  • cooked sushi rice 2 cups
  • rice wine vinegar 2 tbsp
  • sugar 2 tbsp
  • salt to taste
  • roasted nori seaweed 4 sheets
  • English cucumber 1/2, thinly sliced
  • carrot 1/2, peeled and thinly sliced
  • ripe avocado 1/2, thinly sliced
  • ripe mango 1/2, thinly sliced
  • red bell pepper 1/2, thinly sliced
  • light soy sauce for dipping
  • wasabi paste (optional)
PREPARATIONS
  1. Combine the rice and water in a rice cooker. If you don’t have a rice cooker, combine the rice, water and 1 teaspoon of olive oil and bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer for 45 minutes. Remove the rice from heat and let sit, covered, for 10 more minutes. Let it cool.
  2. In a small bowl, combine the rice wine vinegar, sugar and salt. Stir well to allow the sugar to dissolve.
  3. Prepare and slice the filling ingredients for the rolls and set aside.
  4. Transfer the rice to a large bowl and pour in the vinegar mixture. Use a spatula to gently fold in the rice until the mixture is fully incorporated. The rice will start to look glossy.
  5. Place a small bowl of water and a kitchen towel near your work area as your hands will get sticky. Place one nori sheet, glossy side down, onto a bamboo mat and press a handful of rice onto the lower two-thirds of the sheet. At the bottom of the rice place your toppings. Don’t overfill or it will be more difficult to roll. Use the bamboo mat to tuck and roll the nori. Once rolled, use the bamboo mat to gently press and shape the roll. Place the roll to the side, cut side down. Repeat with remaining rolls.
  6. Use a sharp chef’s knife to cut the sushi. Wipe the knife clean with a damp towel between cuts.
  7. Serve immediately with kikkoman soy sauce and wasabi.
Till next recipe guys.

Pan De Amerikana: A Unique Place to Dine

Monday, March 27, 2017 0 Comments

Pan De Amerikana is a bakery-restaurant located in Marikina with an amazing setting to eat in. I have been to this place for several times already. The main reason why I always visit this restaurant is not the food itself but the unique interior of the place. I'm not saying that the food is terrible, in fact, they have the best tasting pandesal and ensaymada in town. Their menu is not out of the ordinary but the place is worth visiting I tell you. It is kinda rustic place with elegance and I would say that it is a tourist destination for curious visitors like me. The whole place is good for photo shoots or if you just want a different kind of dining experience. So before you visit the place, don't forget to bring your camera.

This barrel faucet is so cool I want to take it home

The place is like a museum!

Their faucet and sinks are so old looking but pretty!

You can actually play with this giant chess board

This old kalesa is perfect place to take your fb profile pic!

I feel like I'm in a different time zone

They have pictures of Filipino actors and actresses hanging on their wall.

I ordered this platter good for 2-3 persons. I also ordered the pumpkin soup and the crispy mushroom which is by the way the best in their menu.

So guys, if you are looking for a unique place to dine, Pan De Amerikana is the perfect place to go. Don't expect the food to be exemplary, it's just enough to satisfy your hunger. But for the cheap price, you can't really complain.

Shopping at BeautyMNL

Tuesday, March 21, 2017 0 Comments
Hello loves! Welcome me back for a blogging assignment in collaboration with BeautyMNL! An online beauty destination  for makeup and skincare lovers. I was lucky enough to be handpicked and give the site a test run. Who wouldn't say yes to this amazing opportunity! This site is a dream for a beauty junkie like me.

The website
I am already a member of the site and I have been shopping for some beauty products from them for quite some time now, so clicking and finding the haul was a bit easy for me. The website is user-friendly, organized, and easy to navigate.

The Shop
My most favorite part of the site is the SHOP. BeautyMNL carries over 300+ of brands. They have high-end and affordable products so whether you're on a splurge or you're on a tight budget, BeautyMNL has something for you. They have a wide range of skincare and makeup products from popular and start-up brands. They also have accessories like watches and jewelries.

Payments and Shipping
They accept credit card payments, and bank deposits. They use a very secure payment facility which is Paypal so you are worry-free when checking out. They also have the "(COD) cash on delivery" option for Metro Manila residents which makes online shopping more convenient for people who don't have credit cards. They offer free shipping for orders P2000 and above. And yes, they have the FASTEST delivery service in history of online shopping. They live up to their promise of next-day shipping if you live in the Metro. Impressive by the way.

Their Way of Messaging
Also my favorite is the fun and cool way of  contacting their customers, from the moment you receive order confirmation till your package delivery. Their emails are not so formal like other online shops. Their message warms my heart and make me feel so special. Aside from being polite and friendly, Manong delivery was also sosyal when texting! Englisero ganun.

Authentic Products!
Yup, all their products are guaranteed authentic. So no worries when shopping for high-end products because you are getting what you paid for.

Now let me share to you my haul from the website. I picked several items from their skincare line and I added some makeup too.

Down below are the links of the products that I picked. I will post individual reviews very soon.

BLOOM the Magazine
BeautyMNL is more than just a shop! They also have an online magazine where you can read articles, reviews and tips from beauty bloggers and celebrities.

BeautyMNL has their own review section where buyers can check if the product actually works or not. Very helpful in deciding if the product is worth adding to your cart!

Overall, my shopping experience with BeautyMNL was a breeze. I felt valued as a customer and it's really a fun and hassle free online shopping. I must say that I am very satisfied, two thumbs up! Thank you BeautyMNL for this opportunity! I will be shopping for more in the future.

Colourpop "On A Whim" Satin Liquid Lipstick Review

Monday, February 20, 2017 0 Comments

Colourpop is one of the most popular brand of liquid lipstick nowadays. They are all over the internet and I decided to get myself one set from their mini-size lip kits for a trial. These lip kits are super small but you still get a decent number of uses. They are perfect if you are on a budget!

The packaging is frosty matte with the usual black cap. A lightweight, comfortable, bold lipstick with a Satin finish. This lipstick is extremely long wearing, although not completely kiss proof– you may leave some marks on your coffee cup! I start by prepping my lips with a lip balm to moisturize and improve my lips texture.

These mini size kit are so pretty on my lips since I have red undertone.

Magic Wand: it is a light nude shade and works for every complexion.

Mess Around: I love this grey and beige combination that compliments my skin tone.

Stud: this one is my favorite of all the shades. It is a warm brown terracotta and suits my personality.

TooLips: is a deepened plum brown and perfect for a night out.

Dopey: this shade is a muted pink and my least favorite because I'm not a pink shade lover.

They’re lightly hydrating on the lips. They dry down to a comfortable, satiny finish and are long wearing, but not transfer proof. These wear about 6 – 8 hours on me, and last pretty well through eating and drinking, but you’ll likely have to reapply. They fade evenly and retouching is no problem. They’re also very pigmented and fully opaque in one swipe. And I love the fact that they have no taste or scent.

Overall, this mini set is worth the money and I don't regret buying them at all. I will definitely purchase again on full size. I have been wearing them everyday at work and I get compliments all the time. I wish I could swatch them one by one but I just have no time. Xo

5 Funds to Fill Every Payday

Tuesday, February 07, 2017 0 Comments

What do you usually do when you get your salary? When it comes to money, there are certainly no shortage of ways to spend it. After we receive our salary, we tend to pay our bills and expenses first and whatever is left goes to savings. That is the most popular practice of Filipinos but it should be the other way around. Pay yourself first then the rest follows. We have to save enough and divide our income according to priority. In my case, I only got to fill 3 funds in this list excluding the charity and travel fund (for now). But if you earn more than I do, these should be the funds you got to fill every payday:

1. INVESTMENT FUND
Pay yourself first. This should be for your long term plans. This should be 20% of your income. You have the option to put this on a mutual fund, variable unit linked (VUL), unit investment trust fund (UITF) or stock market. The goal is to beat inflation (which happens to be ~5% yearly in the PH), so you have to find an investment that yields more than 5% rate of return yearly.

2. OPERATING EXPENSES FUND
This is often called the fixed costs. Bills and expenses that needs to be payed. However, this should not exceed 50% of your income. Just as businesses have operating expenses, so should you. This involves necessary costs for your upkeep. Things like rent, transportation, education and food. Whether to include your everyday coffee or your gym membership is your own call.

3. TRAVEL OR VACATION FUND
This one is a must for every person. I mean, we all work so hard and we should reward ourselves with at least one or two travels per year. I put all my extra money in this fund but this is not my priority right now.

4.EMERGENCY FUND
This fund is for emergencies only and should not be touched unless very important. Experts says that you should have at least 6 months of your operating expenses in this fund. This is an account used to set aside funds needed in the event of a personal financial dilemma, such as the loss of a job, a debilitating illness or a major expense. It should be kept in an easy accessible place such as savings account.

And last but not the least,

5. CHARITY FUND
This fund is giving back a portion of our earnings to the Lord. Tithes as we usually call it. Whether you give it to your parish church or to the charity of your choice, it doesn't matter as long as it is used for helping others.

So there you go guys. Till my next post..

Tony Moly CC Cushion Review

Tuesday, January 31, 2017 0 Comments
Hello guys! Welcome me back for another review of this CC Cushion from Tony Moly. I have been a fan of cushions because they are easy to apply. I promised myself that I would try as many cushion as I can. This is the second product that I tried and much more expensive than the Maybelline cushion. If you are looking for a cushion that is suitable for everyday use, and if your skin is fair, this is definitely your go-to product. It has a medium coverage and a dewy effect on skin. I doesn't cover imperfections so this is for people with light-fair skintone. I love how this product creates a korean effect on my skin. (This is a korean product) I know right!

A CC cream cushion infused with a serum base and glacier water for a dewy, natural finish (P1,198). I got the natural beige. The mirror is also big and it covers the entire face.

The texture of this product is very creamy, blendable but it is very pale. It has a luminous consistency which gives the skin a glowy and dewy effect. It can be used alone but there are times when I set this with a powder for a matte finish. And if your skin is oily, a little powder won't hurt.

The packaging is nice. The compact has the standard push-button closure with the air puff applicator.

The inside of this is actually different. It has a cloth-like mesh that is elastic unlike others that has a sponge on them. The mesh controls how much product is dispensed.

Overall I give this CC cushion a two thumbs up but I can only recommend this to those who are looking for a very pale colored CC cream. The mesh cushion is my favorite part of this product because it makes all the difference compared to the sponged cushions. I won't purchase this again because I will try another brand.

Ginger Lemon Tea

Thursday, January 05, 2017 0 Comments
Hello my dear readers! I'm back and let's get this new year a healthy start!
Admit it or not, we have overeaten this past holiday season. It's a good excuse for being unhealthy and being fat. And while most of us are considering hitting the gym to loose some unwanted fats, here is a simple tea recipe that I always drink to give my immune system a boost.
It's so easy to prepare with just few ingredients. Here's how:

4 cups filtered water
2- to 3- inch piece ginger, sliced
Juice of 1 large lemon (or more, to taste)
Sweetener of choice
Slices of fresh lemon

Combine the water and ginger in a large saucepan and bring to a boil. Remove from heat. Add the lemon juice and let steep at least 20 minutes; 30 minutes is even better.

Listed here are the reason why we should take it. Source: Vegkitchen.com
  • It Boosts Your Immune System: On top of the list of benefits of ginger lemon tea is its ability to strengthen your immunity. This is due to the presence of high levels of anti-oxidants in ginger. Lemons are an excellent source of vitamin C which can heal wounds and preserve the strength of bones and teeth. In the onset of cold and flu, the ginger lemon tea can act as an effective anti-biotic. The bioflavonoids that lemons contain help to prevent cancer cells from growing and spreading. The anti-oxidants in the lemons help in reducing inflammation and arthritis symptoms. The powerful anti-oxidants can reduce free radicals in the body. Ginger also increases blood circulation in the body that is vital for optimum health.

  • It Brings Instant Relief From Nausea and Indigestion: Vomiting and nausea usually occur as symptoms of a body disorder. Ginger lemon tea provides the best relief mechanism. Moreover, if you have a motion sickness tendency, you can drink a cup of ginger lemon tea prior to travel to prevent nausea. It can also help cure the vomiting related to chemotherapy and pregnancy, which is a relief during that period. It eases the pain and uneasiness of an upset stomach. The ginger and lemon in the tea lowers the chances of heartburn and indigestion. It causes the food to be better absorbed by the body and prevents belching and bloating after eating too much. It improves your appetite as well.

  • It Lowers The Effects Of Diabetes: New research has thrown light upon the fact that drinking ginger lemon tea on a daily basis can reduce kidney damage that occurs due to the effects of diabetes. The high levels of zinc found in ginger play a prime role in the production and secretion of insulin. It is the insulin that controls the blood sugar levels and keeps diabetes in check. Other harmful effects of diabetes like blood pressure, heart problems and so on can be countered by the anti-oxidants present in the drink.

  • It Is Your One-Stop-Drink To Perfect Skin And Great Hair: As mentioned above, ginger lemon tea is rich in anti-oxidants and vitamins which are beneficial for perfect skin, hair and health. The beverage helps in improving your digestion and guides you towards smooth and flawless skin. The antibacterial and antiseptic properties protect your skin from infections. For strong and beautiful hair, ginger lemon tea provides you a natural aid. Vitamin A and C are recommended in plenty for those with hair issues, as they combat the production of DHT in the scalp that in turn triggers hair growth. A vitamin and anti-oxidant rich drink like ginger lemon tea will help you overcome hair problems in an absolute natural and simple way.

  • It Is The Apt Drink For Weight Loss: High blood sugar levels trigger cravings for carbohydrates and fatty foods. Ginger helps to normalize these sugar levels which otherwise can affect your ability to lose weight or eat healthy food. Ginger also improves fat absorption and prevents it from accumulating in the body. Both ginger and lemon have anti-inflammatory properties that prevent inflammations and enhance the activity of the liver that helps in shedding those extra pounds. The smell of lemons reduces stress causing an increase in metabolism and proper organ function that can help in weight loss.
